The Paralegal provides administrative and legal support to the legal affairs department. Under the direction of the Director, Legal Affairs and Legal Counsel, the Paralegal will provide effective, timely, business-minded service to First West (FW) on a broad range of day-to-day legal issues. Responsibilities include corporate filings, reporting, litigation management, and general legal support.

Here’s what would be included as a part of your typical day:

  • Corporate Filings: Files and maintains corporate and regulatory filings for FW. Prepares corporate documents, including resolutions, articles, extra-provincial registrations, and FICOM filings. Updates and maintains corporate records and minute books in compliance with applicable legislation. Assists with governance legal research and manages execution of applicable documents
  • Reporting: Assists legal and other FW shared services departments with reporting to many stakeholders including the First West Leadership team, the Board of Directors, and internal and external auditors, including litigation reports, insurance claim reports, trademark reports, legal service KPIs and other reports
  • Litigation Management: Manages all small claims litigation for FW and its subsidiaries including drafting and filing small claims pleadings for consumer and employee lawsuits, attending case management and settlement conferences, mediations, and trials as required, case law research, and management of external legal litigation budget and invoicing
  • Legal Department Support: Supports the legal department with various administrative tasks such as drafting and enforcement of legal policies, creation and management/support for legal advice repository, legal education management, travel planning for lawyers, managing and maintaining registries (e.g. federal and provincial lobbying registrations) and acting as a liaison between business departments and lawyers
  • Projects: Provides support to legal affairs with department projects as required, which may include providing due diligence support for transactions, preparing any corporate documents for transactions, legal research and assisting with the preparation of legal components of RFPs

Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications:

  • College, Trade or Tech School Diploma (2 years) Diploma or equivalent from a recognized paralegal program (required)
  • Member of the BC Paralegal Association (required)
  • Other related certifications, designations or licenses (preferred)
  • 3+ years proven corporate experience as a paralegal in a business environment or at a Canadian law firm
  • Experience with financial institutions or litigation
  • Experience with contracts management, matter management, and ERP systems
  • Intermediate skills with computer software applications and MS Office suite
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with a variety of people
  • Effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work through legal issues, using sound judgment, decision-making and critical thinking
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with high level of confidentiality and discretion
