Position: Chief Legal Officer

Department: Legal

Reports to: President, CSE Business Operations

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the President, Business Operations of Canucks Sports & Entertainment (CSE), the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) is responsible for overseeing the strategic, proactive, efficient and effective delivery of a comprehensive range of legal services to the Aquilini Group’s Toptable Group of Restaurants and CSE’s various properties including the Vancouver Canucks (NHL Hockey Club), Abbotsford Canucks (AHL Hockey Club), Vancouver Warriors (NLL Lacrosse Club), Vancouver Titans and Seattle Surge (eSports Teams), Rogers Arena and Abbotsford Centre.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and lead the corporate legal strategy for both Canucks Sports & Entertainment and its sister company, Toptable Restaurant Group, to promote and protect the organizations’ business matters
  • Lead the Legal team who support CSE
  • Provide legal, practical and strategic business advice, as requested, to the appropriate stakeholders
  • Provide legal advice and actively participate in negotiations for new business opportunities of Toptable and CSE
  • Provide strategic advice and legal support to Ownership and the President, as required
  • Provide guidance, as required, on the negotiation, drafting and administering of sponsorship, event licensing, facility leases and licensing, broadcast, executive suite and other agreements or documentation
  • Protect and administer trademarks and other intellectual property rights of the Vancouver Canucks, Rogers Arena, Toptable Group and the associated family of companies and Foundations
  • Oversee the corporate legal records of the various entities associated with the Toptable Group and Canucks Sports & Entertainment, including the Foundations and serve as the Secretary and Counsel to the various Foundations
  • Liaise with and manage external counsel providing legal advice to the organization
  • Manage litigation files, as necessary
  • Develop and lead internal audit and corporate compliance programs
  • Oversight of the organizations insurance programs for risk management
  • Assess and mitigate legal risks of CSE and TT business activities
  • Understand and monitor CSE’s activities in relation to the NHL Regulations
  • Advise Hockey Operations and Finance with respect to issues arising under the CBA
  • Conduct legal research, as required
  • Work closely with CSE/TT Ownership and Senior Executive on initiatives that significantly affect the budget of strategic objectives of the organization
  • Serve as a committed and responsible member of the Executive Team, contributing to the strategic planning process

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • LLB or JD
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of BC; Admission to the B.C. bar required
  • Minimum 10-15 year call, with extensive experience negotiating, drafting and administering contracts
  • Solid experience in various areas of law including contract law, employment law, the judicial system and procedures, current and developing legal issues and trends, legal documentation procedures and requirements, as well as a range of applicable laws and regulations that impact on all facets of business policy and operations
  • Solid research skills
  • A confident and articulate leader with excellent presentation and negotiating skills
  • Articulate, professional with superior verbal and written communication skills
  • A keen ability to analyze and interpret issues and to prepare strong legal arguments and opinions
  • A solid understanding of budgets and the budgeting process
  • Exceptionally well organized
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • A demonstrated willingness to work extended hours, as required
  • A proven ability to work productively and deliver results in a high pressure environment
  • Proficient in MS Office suite of programs
  • Special consideration will be given to those candidates with legal experience in the sports and entertainment industries or in intellectual property and licensing
