The Bilingual Paralegal will provide legal representation in relation to small claims actions and Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (CAMVAP) arbitration proceedings commenced against Honda’s Canadian businesses. Specifically, the Paralegal will manage the defence of all small claims litigation (product liability, warranty, contract) and CAMVAP arbitration proceedings from inception to conclusion including: legal drafting, negotiation, and attendance at hearings and trial.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review small claims or CAMVAP documentation and determine appropriate course of action
  • Draft court and arbitration documents
  • Communicate and negotiate with plaintiffs and/or plaintiffs’ counsel
  • Preparation for trial and arbitration, including strategy, document gathering and witness preparation
  • Represent Honda at small claims settlement conferences, motions and trial, including frequent travel
  • Represent Honda at CAMVAP arbitration hearings
  • Administer and manage legal document management file systems
  • Develop and sustain effective and collaborative professional working relationships within the Legal department and with business customers
  • Provide legal advice to Customer Relations team in support of risk management pre-litigation
  • Monitor developments in the law to determine impact on company and identify opportunities; liaise with other paralegal/counsel and participate in industry associations as to relate to CAMVAP

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Paralegal in good standing licensed or accredited as required in a Canadian jurisdiction
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a law firm or in-house environment
  • Bilingual in English and French required
  • Valid driver’s licence required
  • Ability to travel throughout Canada (approximately 4 times per month)
  • Litigation experience, particularly in relation to product liability, and warranty disputes
  • Strong organizational/project management skills
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills, negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate issues and strategically identify risk
  • Flexible and adapts to change well
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of integrity
  • Experience in the automotive industry would be considered an asset
