What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:
• work with a litigation support team assisting counsel with the preparation of motions, tribunals, hearings, inquests, trials, pre-trials
• support counsel with a wide range of other legal files including contracts, legislation, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario matters, and FOI
• gather, review, assess and catalogue records/evidence, handle records requests for motions, redact documents
• prepare transcripts and chronological lists or summaries of documents
• type and prepare routine correspondence from handwritten notes or verbal instructions, letters, memoranda, legal opinions, reports, orders-in-council and other legal documents
• monitor files and handle and prioritize a large volume of complex cases
• conduct inquiries for the purposes of assisting counsel in determining the degree of liability against the Crown and Crown employees in the Province of Ontario
• ensure compliance with limitation periods and time limits imposed by the rules of Civil Procedure, legislation, case management rules and alternate dispute resolution requirements
• carry out research on databases such as Quicklaw, Westlaw and research on legislation and regulations on e-laws
• conduct corporate, title and other due diligent searches
• work on the records management system (opening, closing files) and make meeting and travel arrangements
• provide support with overall branch processes, systems and procedures including maintenance of supplies and equipment and mail log and aiding in the resolution of technical/computer/ network issues

How do I qualify?


• You are able to type 50 words per minute

Legal Knowledge:

• You have knowledge of legal office methods, procedures and practices, federal and provincial statutes, Rules of Civil Procedure
• You are familiar with legal documents, formats, and terminology

Research and Analytical Skills:

• You have the ability to review legal documents and identify issues
• You can conduct complex searches using a variety of legal databases
• You can determine confidentiality of privileged information

Organizational Skills:

• You have demonstrated organizational skills in dealing with large volume of files
• You have the ability to effectively prioritize your work
• You have planning and coordinating skills to resolve problems with completing client interests

Computer Skills:

• You use word processing and related software to prepare letters, reports, spreadsheets, and graphs
• You can enter and retrieve information using database applications

Communication Skills:

• You have the ability to communicate with tact and discretion
• You can explain complex information clearly and relay instructions
• You can prepare legal documentation using proper terminology
