Contributes to the overall success of the Legal Department in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.


  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

  • Supporting the Bank’s Group Treasury function on securities law issues and offerings in Canada, the US and internationally, including debt, equity and securitizations; support Global Banking and Markets on structured note offerings and investment banking matters, and the Bank generally on securities and corporate law matters.

  • Working collaboratively within the Legal Department and with multiple stakeholders including Compliance and Finance, including on the Bank’s public disclosure.

  • Participating as Scotiabank’s legal representative on select external and internal industry associations;

  • Ensure timely action is taken to effectively manage and mitigate risks, including prompt escalation of breaches of management limits or risk appetite measures as per established processes.

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Education / Experience

  • Graduate of a recognized law school
  • Private practice or in-house experience with a specialty in securities law
  • Membership in the law society of one of the provinces of Canada
  • Being qualified to practice US law an asset
