Patent Paralegal (term) – Calgary and Regina

This position will work under the supervision of lawyers and will assist with legal tasks in accordance with MLT Aikins processes and guidelines. The successful candidate will also work with our IP administration group regarding file intake and invoicing.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing patent docket including docket deadlines and maintaining the integrity of docket data
  • Assisting with preparing patent filings/PCTs and industrial designs
  • Reviewing incoming correspondence from CIPO and foreign associates and assisting in preparing reporting letters to clients
  • Maintaining, organizing and updating docket system of due dates for action and follow up
  • Docketing and preparing office action instructions for review by agents and lawyers and lodging for filing to the patent offices
  • Sending weekly prosecution reminders to clients which are generated through the docketing software
  • General administrative tasks including file management, precedent maintenance and entry of tariff codes and time
  • Completing status checks
  • Coordinating transfers of files and appointment of MLT Aikins as agent
  • File opening and data validation in all operational programs and databases
  • Processing internal transfer of files between associates firms

Qualifications include:

  • Three or more years of experience in this role plus graduated from a recognized paralegal program or equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered
  • Knowledge of Patrix IP Helpware is an asset
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Previous experience in intellectual property, specifically in areas of patents and industrial designs
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Strong teamwork skills, problem solving skills and attention to detail
