About the role

Manager, Legal Department 

As WorkplaceNL’s Manager, Legal, you will accountable for managing  WorkplaceNL’s Legal Department strategic approach to achieving its mandate through the development and monitoring of WorkplaceNL’s delivery of legal services, corporate governance, investigations, privacy, and other related initiatives. The Legal Department acts as the central office within WorkplaceNL for the protection and advancement of WorkplaceNL’s legal interests, all matters relating to legislation, privacy, and investigations. The positions reporting to the Manager Legal Department are: Legal Administrative Coordinator, Investigator and Legal Adjuster.

Role Responsibilities

  • Engage with internal stakeholders to understand the legal, investigations and privacy needs and requirements of the organization. 
  • Oversee and monitor the intake, assignment and organization of services provided by the Department. 
  • Analyze complex data and information from a variety of sources to identify and build legal service solutions. 
  • Develop, coordinate and execute annual departmental operating plans ensuring alignment with the strategic plan and the priorities of the organization.
  • Plan and develop criteria and guidelines for the organization of services provided by the Legal Department (the Department) including the exploration, selection, and implementation of technological solutions. 
  • Collaborate with the Finance Department to develop and monitor efficient and appropriate procurement processes. 
  • Develop, implement and coordinate the Department’s contract management requirements and liaise with the Finance Department and the organization’s contract owners to support the Legal Department’s contract engagements. 
  • Oversee the Legal Department’s Third-Party program, ensuring efficient and effective processes are in place to maximize Third-Party recoveries. 
  • Develop, define, and measure data on the Legal Department responsibilities, services, and initiatives. 
  • Coordinate and plan Board of Directors (the Board) meetings, agendas, and materials in consultation with the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Liaise with the Board Chairperson, members of the Board, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and other members of the Executive Team to ensure the timely and coordinated oversight of the organization’s initiatives by the Board.
  • Supports the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in assuring the annual processes of the Board are brought forward to the Board Chairperson, including the annual Board evaluation, the performance evaluation of the CEO and the appointment of new Board members.

 

Essential Skills and Qualifications  

  • A university degree in law, social science, business, public administration, commerce, or a similar discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Five years of experience working in a legal environment, with progressively responsible roles. Knowledge of and experience with contract management and procurement processes. 
  • Knowledge of and experience with court processes. Knowledge of and experience with corporate governance. 
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships and influence others at all levels of the organization. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with strong project management and organizational skills. 
  • Skilled problem solver with demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, make decisions, manage complex issues and work independently. Comprehensive knowledge of the workers’ compensation system and relevant provincial legislation.
