The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is an agency where innovation thrives, ideas flourish, and passion drives us to new heights of excellence. Reporting to the Ministry of the Attorney General, the AGCO is responsible for regulating Ontario’s vibrant alcohol, gaming, horse racing, and private retail cannabis sectors in accordance with the principles of honesty and integrity, and in the public interest. The Legal Services Division of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) plays a vital role in supporting the agency’s mandate by providing a broad range of legal services. Our team advises the Registrar and AGCO staff on corporate and regulatory matters, including Freedom of Information requests, policy development, contract drafting, and legislative matters. We represent the AGCO in litigation under the Liquor Licence and Control Act, the Gaming Control Act, the Cannabis Licence Act, and the Horse Racing Licence Act, at the Licence Appeal Tribunal and the Horse Racing Appeal Panel. We also conduct Appeals and Judicial Reviews at the Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. As an Articling Student, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in administrative and regulatory law, working alongside experienced legal professionals in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. What You Will Do: The successful candidate will be articled to the Legal Director, Litigation and will provide legal services including: Conduct legal research and preparing memoranda for Division counsel Participate in committee work and special projects Assist in the preparation of materials for appeals and judicial reviews Maintain carriage of compliance files in the Letter of Incident process Maintain precedent files and databases Prepare contracts and procurement documents Perform other duties as assigned You Have: Student membership in the Law Society of Ontario Fully registered in the Lawyer Licensing Process and eligible for articling in accordance with the requirements set out by the Law Society of Ontario Excellent legal research and writing skills Knowledge of legislation administered by the AGCO Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation Ability to meet urgent deadlines and to handle multiple tasks based on their priority Strong attention to detail Excellent judgment, organization, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability and willingness to travel within Ontario, including a valid driver’s license with at least the privileges of a class “G” driver’s license in Ontario Advanced MS Office computer skills Eligibility to work in Canada and the ability to successfully complete a criminal background check.
