Characteristic Duties: Under the general supervision of the Deputy City Solicitor.

  1. Assist the Solicitors in every facet of the practice of law in CGS’s Legal Services Section.
  2. Search titles, executions, Personal Property Security registrations for both the Land Titles and Registry Systems.
  3. Prepare all necessary documents and correspondence and close CGS’s real estate transactions under the Solicitor’s instructions.
  4. Draft various correspondence, agreements, instruments, and attend to their execution and registration when required.
  5. Draft, prepare and file materials for court and administrative tribunal proceedings.
  6. Perform all duties related to tax sale procedures under the Municipal Act, 2011, direct the preparation of tax registration documents and attend to registration of same.
  7. Serve and file documents in legal proceedings.
  8. Assist the Solicitors in research and preparation for meetings of Council and various committees, boards and corporations.
  9. Maintain library for the Legal Services Section.
  10. Maintain petty cash fund for the Legal Services Section.
  11. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
  12. Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Community College Diploma in a Law Clerk Program or other law related program.
  • Over one (1) year up to and including two and one-half (2½) years of law office experience in a similar capacity.
  • Familiarity with law office practices and procedures.
  • Satisfactory keyboarding skills (40 words per minute).
  • Demonstrated and proven ability related to computer software and administrative systems in a Windows environment (e.g. files maintenance, word processing, computerized spreadsheet applications, information input and retrieval, etc.).
  • A member of or eligible for membership in the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario.
  • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
  • French verbal and written skills an asset.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
  • Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver’s licence, have an acceptable driving record, and personal insurance coverage.
